The Chemistry Department at the Govt. M.A.O. Graduate College was established in the initial years of its existence. Over the years, some really dedicated heads have served this department and sustained its prestige. These include Prof. Dr. M.A. Azeem, Prof. Mian Muhammad Bashir, Prof. Muhammad Naseer Khan, Prof. Hameed Mustafa Butt, Prof. Saeedullah Farooqi, Prof. Maqsood-ul-Hassan Bokhari, Prof. Ch. Akhtar Ali, Prof. Shabbir Hussain, Prof. Ch. Ghafoor Ahmad, Prof. Ch. Muhammad Iqbal, Prof. Javed Akhtar Saleem, Prof. Syed Ali Raza Naqvi, Prof. Sarwar Najeeb Alam Janjua, Prof. Dr. Tahseen Razzaq and Prof. Muhammad Akbar. At present, Prof. Muhammad Sohail Yousaf is serving as the head of the department along with the devoted and highly qualified faculty.
Chemistry Department prides itself in its well-equipped and up-to-date laboratory. In order to fulfill the requirements of BS Chemistry, the lab is equipped with flame photometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, conductometers, and polarimeters etc. Efforts are being made for further purchase of instruments. The Department provides facility of research for students of degree program. Currently, there are twenty students doing research in Synthetic Organic and Biochemistry.
Two combinations are being offered for admission in BS: Combination 1 is for the student with F.Sc. (Pre-Medical) background and Combination 2 is for those who have passed F.Sc. (Pre-Engineering). The Department takes admission on open merit basis every year after declaration of result of F.Sc. In BS, the college offers co-education classes. The Chemistry department also conducts seminars and various co-curricular activities on regular basis to polish the raw talent of the students.
