Psychology is a science of behavior and its pivotal role in understanding complex mechanisms underlying human behavior lands in improving the quality of human life cannot be underestimated. In realization of this fact Prof. Karamat Hussain Jafery (an eminent psychologist of his time and then principal of this college) established the Department of Psychology in late 1960's with the cooperation of Prof. Manzoor Ahmad who remained the head of the department for many years. Later, in view of public interest and demand, with the efforts of the two ex-principals; Prof Zafar Iqbal Cheema and Prof. Maqsood-ul-Hasan Bukhari, M.Sc. in Psychology was started in this college in 1998. Later, the remarkable contribution of Head of this Department, Prof. Badar Ismail, Prof. Dr. Abbas Ali Asim, Prof. Ch. Khalid Pervaiz, Prof. Tauqeer Saleem Khan, Prof. Zafar Jamal, Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Pirzada, Dr. Shabbir Ahmad Rana uplifted the academic and professional repute of this department across the country.
To make education more effective, formal teaching is supplemented with regular seminars, extension lectures, workshops, interactive group discussions, joint classrooms activities and the use of audio-visual aids. In addition, visits/internships at psychiatric departments of several hospitals and academic links with numerous organizations provide ample opportunities to students to learn and grow. The library of the department is equipped with 3000 books and many national and international research Journals. The department prides itself in its academic excellence and achievement of its graduates who are serving in many areas; Educational Institutions, Special Education Centers, Hospitals, Armed Forces, Counseling and Guidance Centers, Selection Boards, Research Organizations, Civil Services, Business Enterprises, Industrial Concerns, Social Welfare Agencies, Police Department, Prisons, Rescue 1122 and multiple NGOs, etc. The plan for starting MS/M.Phil (Evening Program) in Psychology is under process and hopefully will be finalized in near future.
